Working windmills, a cheese farm and Volendam fishing villages in one unhurried day. The classic Dutch countryside route, guided door to door from Amsterdam.

This is the day most people picture when they think of Holland — and it genuinely looks like the postcards. We leave Amsterdam in the morning and within half an hour the city gives way to open polder landscape: green meadows, grazing cows and canals that have moved water for four centuries.

At Zaanse Schans you step inside a working windmill and watch the sails turn overhead, then visit a clog workshop and a cheese farm where you can taste Gouda at every stage of ripening. From there we continue to Edam, a quiet canal town famous for its cheese weighing house, before reaching the lively harbour of Volendam for lunch along the waterfront.

The day ends with the ferry crossing to Marken, a former island of wooden houses on stilts that feels untouched by time. Throughout the day your driver-guide shares the stories behind the landscape — how the Dutch drained it, farmed it and defended it — and there is never a rush: small groups, door-to-door pickup and plenty of time at every stop.

Good to know: wear comfortable shoes, as you will walk on cobblestones and wooden boardwalks, and bring a light jacket — the wind off the IJsselmeer can be cool even in summer. Lunch is at your own pace in Volendam, where we happily point you to the best smoked fish and fresh kibbeling on the harbour. Prefer a slower day or have little ones with you?
