Giethoorn is the village with no roads. For centuries the only way to move around was by boat or on foot, and it still feels that way: thatched farmhouses sit on their own little islands, connected by more than 170 wooden footbridges over narrow, mirror-calm canals.

The drive north-east from Amsterdam is part of the experience — flat polders, wide skies and the wetlands of the Weerribben-Wieden national park. Once in the village, your guide leads a short orientation walk over the bridges before you board a whisper boat: a quiet electric boat that glides past cottage gardens, hydrangeas and centuries-old farmhouses without disturbing a thing.

After the cruise you have free time for lunch by the water and to explore the village lanes on your own. Giethoorn is one of the most photographed places in the Netherlands, and with a small group and an early arrival, you see it at its most peaceful.

Good to know: the drive to Giethoorn takes about two hours each way, and we make a coffee stop along the way so the journey stays relaxed. On arrival you can choose between a guided canal cruise or steering your own quiet electric whisper boat — no experience needed. Late spring and early autumn are the loveliest times, with fewer visitors and soft light on the thatched roofs.
