Two very different cities in one day: royal, diplomatic The Hague and the bold modern architecture of Rotterdam, with a North Sea beach stop.

No two Dutch cities contrast as sharply as The Hague and Rotterdam, and seeing them back to back is what makes this day so good. The Hague is the seat of government and the royal family: elegant, green and diplomatic, home to the Binnenhof parliament complex, the Peace Palace and the Mauritshuis with Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earring.

After a breath of sea air at Scheveningen — the Grand Kurhaus hotel, the pier and the wide North Sea beach — we continue to Rotterdam, a city that rebuilt itself from the ground up after the war and never stopped experimenting. You will see the Cube Houses, the horseshoe-shaped Markthal with its enormous ceiling artwork, and the Erasmus Bridge sweeping across Europe's largest port.

Your guide connects the two stories: how one city preserved its past and the other reinvented its future. If you want to add Madurodam's miniature Netherlands or the Kinderdijk windmills, just ask — the day can be tailored to your group.

Inside visits such as the Mauritshuis or the Markthal are optional and can be added on request.
