Polders, dikes and grazing cows away from the tour buses. A relaxed loop through villages where the Netherlands still feels rural.

This is the Holland that locals love and most visitors never see. Instead of the famous stops, we drive a quiet loop through the Waterland polders just north of Amsterdam — a landscape of impossibly green meadows, black-and-white cows, and horizons so wide you can watch the weather arrive.

Along the way your guide explains the ingenious system of dikes, ditches and windmills that keeps this land — much of it below sea level — dry. We stop at a historic polder mill, drive along dike-top roads with water on both sides, and pause in a small village for coffee and proper Dutch apple pie.

The afternoon includes a visit to a working farm and cheese producer, where you meet the maker and taste cheese that never reaches a supermarket. No crowds, no queues, no script — just the countryside at its most peaceful, with plenty of stops whenever a photo or a question calls for it.

Good to know: this is the most peaceful of our tours, ideal for photographers and anyone who wants to see real village life away from the crowds. Expect quiet dike roads, grazing sheep and the chance to stop wherever the view is best. In winter, if the canals freeze, we may even find locals skating — a sight you will never forget.
